Midi Z (1982) was born in Myanmar. He studied design and art before obtaining a master degree from the National Taiwan University of Technology and Science. Return to Burma, his debut feature, was competing at the Rotterdam Festival in 2012. Ice Poison won the Best Film at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2014.

Four of his films were nominated for Oscars, and he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2000. He also received Palme d’Or at 1981 Cannes, and an Honorary Golden Bear at Berlinale 2006.
