In post-war Poland, renowned avant-garde painter and theorist Wladyslaw Strzemiński works as a professor at the National School of Visual Arts in Łódź. Unlike artists loyal to the doctrines of socialist realism and fulfilling Party tasks, he does not compromise his art. The film chronicles struggles with the darkening skies of totalitarianism.

Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016) was an icon of Polish cinema. His more than 50 features include Ashes and Diamonds (1958), The Promised Land (1975), Man of Iron (1981) and Katyn (2007). Four of his films were nominated for Oscars, and he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 2000. He also received Palme d’Or at 1981 Cannes, and an Honorary Golden Bear at Berlinale 2006.
