Lectures

This year's lectures:

Popular themes and subjects in European student film
Lecturer: Bert Beyner, director, president of GEETC, European Grouping of Film and Television, Schools, Belgium
Monday, July 17 at 10:00 I Croatian Chamber of Commerce

The films that students work in during their education are extremely important, for several reasons. Along with fostering new and innovative aesthetics, of course, student film is a reflection of creative collaboration, a result of the synergy of future film professionals - the people that the future of a country’s cinematography depends on. It is precisely for this reason that it is interesting to compare the themes and aesthetics that young filmmakers foster, as it is these themes and aesthetics that reveal the answer to the question of what kind of film future we are to expect. We welcome GEETC president Bert Beyens, who is going to talk about his thinking and perception of the themes and subjects popular in recent European student film.

Strategies for marketing The High Sun in Croatia and abroad:  a case study
Lecturer: Ankica Jurić Tilić, producer - Kinorama, Croatia
Tuesday, July 18 at 10:00 I Croatian Chamber of Commerce

Each new film has to fight with several tens of thousands new films released every year - ensuring visibility is a near impossible task. This is why there is a need to create awareness of the next film while it’s still a work in progress. With the task of developing and producing projects, which is not at all easy, comes the task of systematic work on the visibility of the film, both on the domestic and on the international market. For a film from a small market, screening at festivals is key for future international distribution and sales, while other rules apply for the domestic market. The High Sun by Dalilbor Matanić is a film with an extraordinary path at festivals, exceptional visibility, and significant international sales. Using this film as an example, we will show to what extent the strategy for marketing has helped this cause, and to what extent expert assistance and luck contributed.

Film posters and the other hundred or so things
Lecturers: Marko Šesnić and Goran Turković, graphic designers - Šesnić&Turković, Croatia
Wednesday, July 19 at 10:00 I Croatian Chamber of Commerce

Graphic design for film is not just film posters. A large team works on the promotion of a film: producers, public relations experts, trailer editors, distributers, sales agents, cinemas, and visual communications designers. Graphic design is a tool used in all phases of film production, from the presentation of project development, to promotion during filming, continuous promotion on social networks, festival promotion, support to sales agents, cinema distribution, and VOD and TV promotion. Using some twenty feature fictions films we have created designs for, we will talk about what is designed in which phase of film production, and why it is important to have systematic and continuous visual promotion.

NOTE: The lecture will be given in Croatian.

Role of international cooperation and festivals in film promotion and distribution
Lecturer: Jelka Stergel, head of international relations and director of Festival of Slovenian Film
Thursday, July 20 at 10:00 I Croatian Chamber of Commerce

One of the very important issues in marketing audiovisual projects is the international aspect of their promotion, and especially their festival life. Because of all of the specificities of today’s audiovisual market in our region and in Europe, it is important to design smart strategies for international promotion and festival distribution, and to consider the social, economic and time components that affect promotion and distribution.

The issue of international cooperation is very important, in the aspect of pre-production and production, as well as post-production, where international relations of (co-)producers, established to support the life of the film after its premiere, are key for a more successful reception of audiovisual projects by the audience.

Pula Film Festival welcomes Jelka Stergel, head of international relations and director of Festival of Slovenian Film, who has a lot of experience and expertise, and who will share her thoughts and advice on the role of international cooperation and festivals in the promotion and distribution of independent European film.

NOTE: The lecture will be given in Croatian.
